Fourth Edition. Title to spine is 'Paley's Gothic Moldings'. Directions for copying them and for determining their dates. Upwards of six hundred examples. B/w illustrations to text. 94 pages plus 21 plates to rear and 2 pages of publisher adverts. Boards lightly unevenly faded and have a few minor marks. Top & tail of spine shelf-worn. Text block browned. 'S.' in pen to front pastedown. Front joint publled between front endpaper and half-title page but binding tight. Half-title page browned and has a contemporary ink name & date to top ege.

Top & tail of spine and corners lightly rubbed. Front joint starting to crack but binding still firm. Text block browned. Small ink mark to front pastedown. Some light corner creasing. One folding map has a 2" closed tear (no loss). Contents generally clean for a book over 150 years old.

Inscription in ink to front free-endpaper dedicated to Poet Longellow's two sons (Charley & Ernest), Ernest has been neatly crossed out. The inscription is dated 1851, the printed date on the title-page is 1852. Some hinges pulled, some page browning.

Glue binding has dried out and therefore the pages are liable to come loose/detached. Preface page is detached at time of description. A few marks to contents. A good reading copy.

Boards lightly marked, light fading to top margin of rear board. Spine slightly cocked. Text block browned. Endpapers marked with age, front endpaper has an area where a label has been removed and so the colour is less faded in this rectangle. Page browning. A nice copy considering its age!

Two volumes. Very large format. 14.5 x 11". Dark green cloth, gilt titles to spine and front cover. Bevelled edges. Elaborate red and gold vignette to front covers. All edges gilt. 12 superb colour plates. Numerous b/w text illustrations. Tintern Abbey is the colour frontis and first subject of volume I. Undated. Spines worn to top & tail with board beneath cloth exposed. Corners are rubbed. A few marks to boards. Joints starting to crack. Vertical crease to front endpaper of volume I. Plate opposite page 48 (The Cistercian Abbey of Melrose) and page 124 (The Premonstratensian Abbey of Dryburgh) are missing. Some hinges are pulled but binding tight. Plates are lovely and bright with some minor marks to margins. Scattered foxing throughout both volumes.

Flowers are pressed and mounted on card with paper guards. 212 specimens, 4 and 6 per page. Hand-written pencil common name to each specimen. List of Contents handwritten to rear. Pages bound in with cloth. Spine & corners rubbed, scratched & lightly worn. Boards scuffed and discoloured. Large bookplate of previous owner to front pastedown. Small tear to lower edge of front endpaper. Endpapers are grubby. Specimens are discoloured, some have disintegrated in part. Heavy foxing to paper guards. Browning to card on which specimens are placed. Some card margins are disintegrating, exposing fresh card beneath. All specimens are present if only in part (mostly complete). An unusual item.

Burgundy cloth spine & corners, brown patterned cloth to sides, gilt title to front board. Spine has disintegrated with much loss. Corners are worn. Foxing to tissue guards and pale foxing to specimen pages. Pressed specimens are discoloured with age but complete. Ribbon closure to vertical edge of boards is missing. An unusual item.
