At the close of the eighteenth century, the isolated Cardiganshire estate of Hafod was an essential destination for the early tourist in Wales. Its owner, Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), transformed the wild country into a paradise, practising the most advanced Picturesque landscaping of his day. An Attempt to Describe Hafod, published in 1796, provided the fullest account of the aesthetic experience of Hafod, as viewed from Johnes' extensive walks. Its author, George Cumberland, was a close friend of Johnes. This edition is produced to mark the 200th anniversary of its first publication, the original text and map are reproduced in facsimile. Also an introductory essay by Donald Moore. Cream cardwraps. B/w illustrations. viii and 50 numbered pages. ISBN: 0952794101. Cover corners lightly rubbed. Contents clean.
