Green cloth with gilt title and vignette to spine and front cover. Numerous b/w illustrations. 366 pages. All edges gilt. Spine and corners bumped and worn. Some slight rubbing to the gilt vignettes. Tissue-guard to frontis has been removed. Name and date in ink to verso of front free-endpaper. Some erased pencil writing to front fly-leaf. Some foxing throughout, some page corner tips creased. Joints cracked, rear joint has exposed webbing, some hinges pulled but binding still tight. Grubby fingermarks to contents. Still a decent copy of a scarce book.

This is copy 1198. Contained in publisher's red cloth solander case which is lightly speckled.

Very good condition.
A book in which Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights in his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition. Rackham rose to the occasion and produced 37 memorable illustrations including 16 in full colour. Green cloth, gilt decoration to front cover and spine. 318 pages. Spine browned and thus gilt to spine is faded. Corners rubbed and a little worn, lower rear corner has tiny nibble to cloth at edge. Text block and endpapers browned. Gift inscription in ink to front endpaper. All plates present, pale foxing to plate edges, tissue guards browned. Plate facing page 214 has slight surface paper damage to margins where tissue-guard was stuck. Contents clean.

Covers are edge worn, a bit grubby and there is a light circular mark (cup mark?) to centre of front cover. Spine is worn at top and tail with fraying of cloth and is grubby and faded. Name and date in ink in belongs to box. Heavy foxing throughout. Hinges pulled and cracked showing stitching beneath.

Flowers are pressed and mounted on card with paper guards. 212 specimens, 4 and 6 per page. Hand-written pencil common name to each specimen. List of Contents handwritten to rear. Pages bound in with cloth. Spine & corners rubbed, scratched & lightly worn. Boards scuffed and discoloured. Large bookplate of previous owner to front pastedown. Small tear to lower edge of front endpaper. Endpapers are grubby. Specimens are discoloured, some have disintegrated in part. Heavy foxing to paper guards. Browning to card on which specimens are placed. Some card margins are disintegrating, exposing fresh card beneath. All specimens are present if only in part (mostly complete). An unusual item.
