Grey cloth, red titles. Enchanting b/w wood-engravings. 200 pages. (The true first edition, as this book was later published with colour plates). Spine and corners bumped. Fading to cover at top of spine and top front cover. Endpapers and textblock foxed. Dustwrapper is slightly edge worn and torn with slight loss to top of spine, rear panel is very slightly grubby.

The inscription is dated 1851, the printed date on the title-page is 1852. Some hinges pulled, some page browning.
