Re-backed with original spine laid down. Front pastedown has a couple of small chips, endpapers have a few minor marks. A few margin marks and foxspots. All plates present, colours vivid and bright. One plate has a margin crease. A nice copy considering its age.

This book contains figures of three hundred and forty species of which one hundred and twenty are drawn from living, and one hundred and two from preserved specimens. Top & tail of spine and corners lightly rubbed. Text block browned. Top of title page has been cut off and is missing but does not affect the title itself. Some light page browning. Rear endpapers a little grubby. Overall a decent copy.

Several entire chapters have been added to make the survey of the animate creation more complete, and the whole haws been carefully revised. Green cltoh boards, gitl title and vignettes to spine, vignette of large bowl with a fish inside to front board. Title to spine is 'Life by P.H. Gosse'. B/w plates and illustrations to text. viii and 363 pages including index. Spine browned, split & worn at edges. Corners rubbed and worn. Contemporary inscription in ink to front endpaper and name in pencil. Joints split, cracked to bottom, starting to come unstuck from spine. Text block browned. Prelims almost detached. A few pencil annotations (underlining), grubby marks and some foxing. A good working copy, sold with all faults.
