- Dancers are notoriously superstitious, and Sylvia was no exception to the rule. She believed implicitly in the magical properties of her swan feather. But she was to find that, although it may be a comforting thing to have a mascot when one is young and unsure of oneself, it is talent and sheer hard work that gets one to the top of one's profession - not a mere swan's feather.
- This is the story of Sylvia Swan, and also of Vicki (young daughter of Veronica and Sebastian Scott) both of whom are studying at the Royal Ballet School. In her adventures Sylvia stays at Vicki's home, Bracken Hall in Northumberland, and meets many of Vicki's friends - among them Mariella Campbell and Jane Charlton. Also Nigel Monkhouse, young squire of Bychester, and his redoubtable mother, who are definitely not numbered among Vicki's friends!
