THE FAIRY TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM

Originally published by Freemantle in 1900, Constable purchased the copyright and reissued this sumptuous version with revised, redrawn and recoloured illustrations. Crimson cloth with gilt decorations to spine and front cover. 40 exquisite tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue guards. Red and grey pictorial endpapers. Top edge red. 325 pages. Title on front cover and spine is "Grimm's Fairy Tales". Spine is damaged - 3.5" split to edge of front cover at base, 1.5" to centre of spine at top. Spine also slightly faded. One plate (opposite page 28) is detached, one opposite page 90 is creased, all others present and mostly in fine condition. Tissue-guard for frontis is missing, a couple of others are loose with ragged edges. Foxing and some fingering to contents. A good copy of a scarce Rackham edition.

A contribution to the mood of patriotism and co-operation between the Allies during WWI, Rackham departs from his usual style in that this book is full of images which thrill and inspire but which do not terrify. Reports coming back from the Front were enough to suggest that this time the Allies could be spared violent images with their family reading at home! Blue cloth, gilt vignette. Introduction by Edmond Gosse. 13 tales. 12 colour plates plus b/w illustrations. 122 pages. 8 x 6". Spine and corners bumped and slightly rubbed. Gilt to spine dulled. Endpapers browned. Inscription in ink to half title-page. Joint between endpaper and half title is partially cracked. Some foxing and grubby fingermarks to page margins throughout.

Bumping and wear to spine and corners. Spine faded, uneven fading to rear cover, uneven darkening to front cover. 1 plate is missing and 6 are detached, some of which are the tipped in colour plates and the complete page and tissue guard are detached, page edges on some ragged. Rear joint and a couple of hinges cracked. Some browning and foxing to contents but generally clean.

Some marks to wrapper.

Edmund Gosse has brought together this collection of Swinburne's poems which are concerned with infancy. Rackham's delicate and romantic illustrations are a perfect complement to the text. 8 colour plates plus b/w text decorations. Dark green cloth with gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Green/white decorated endpapers. 133pp. cr 4to. Spine and corners bumped and a little worn. Gilt on the spine is dulled. Light scuffing to rear board. Writing in pencil to top of front pastedown. Rear endpaper has horizontal crease. Foxing throughout otherwise contents generally clean. Plates are bright.
