Large tear to page 17/18 and smaller tear to page 12/13. Page edges are grubby. Several corners are folded over. Some grubby marks to page margins. A reading copy.

Facsimile of the 5th Rupert annual (1940), the first to be issued in full colour throughout. Due to paper rationing during the war this was probably the ONLY annual to be issued that year. Colour 'wrap-around' pictorial boards. ISBN: 1874507015. '1940' written in ink to inside front cover, else contents are excellent!
Laminated pictorial boards. Front cover has head and shoulders of Rupert with sea in the background. First story is Rupert and the Copper Bird. Bumping and wear to spine and corners. Splitting to laminate to top of spine; a bit of foxing. Chipping to base of spine; a little loss. Creasing to front endpaper, with inscription in pencil to belongs to box, same page has a little pencil colour scribble. NOT price-cut. Colouring contest and page next to it have colouring in and some scribble. Butterfly colouring to page 63 has been completed. Hinge between pages 78 + 79 has been pulled. Rupert's Nature Spotting Hobby has been completed in pencil (p. 20/21).
The last hardcover annual to be published during the war years and widely considered to be the best Rupert annual ever. Front cover shows Rupert holding a paddle and waving while Algy looks on from a little boat. First story Rupert and the Red Egg. 118 pages. Covers are very browned/darkened, with scuffing and wear; a few pencil marks. Heavy wear and bumping to corners. Original spine is MISSING; a colour facsimile has been used to reback book, with original covers laid down; a little fraying to cloth along edges. Front joint is 'repaired' with white tape. Date and inscription in ink to belongs to box page, which is also grubby. Grubby marks throughout. Page 15/16 is detached, but still present. White label repairs to pages 42-44 + 116/177. Large margin tear to page 17/18. A reading copy only.

Bottom 1" of spine has tear, with split, but is partially repaired with glue. Grubby marks and some scuffing to covers. Year date in ink to inside front cover. Price-cut. Inscription in ink to belongs to box. Faint red pencil colour to title page. Maze puzzle to prelims has some faint marks. A few light margin marks, else contents are clean.

Base of spine is repaired (re glued), with a little colouring - about 1.75", split to one side. Creasing to rear cover, with some scuffing and light surface paper damage. Not price-cut. Inscription in ink to belongs to box. Year date in ink to inside front cover. Grubby margin marks to a few pages internally. Pictures are still bright. Small margin tear to last page, repaired with magic tape. Last page has a split gutter. Still a good copy of this rarer edition.
