The Defensive. The first of three volumes. This volume deals with the beginning of the second world war from 1939 to 1941. xxii + 664 pages. Numerous folding b/w charts. Spine and cover edges are browned. Foxing; heaviest to endpapers, outer page edges and margins. Map to page 65 appears to have been misfolded a few times; chips and nicks along with browning to protruding edge. Wrapper is edge-creased with tears and chips; browned to spine and edges; small white splash mark to bottom edge of front panel.

Volume II - East, published 1932 Volume III - South-West, published 1934. Spines have varying degrees of browning and fading. Volume II also has a couple of small tears to cloth at top and tail. Inscription in ink (partially crossed out) to front endpaper of Volume I. Foxing to endpapers and outer page edges of all volumes. A couple of plate pages (b/w photos), have neat annotations/notes beneath them in pencil.
