Large format. Dark blue cloth, gilt titles and decoration to spine and front cover. 30 stunning tipped-in tissue-guarded colour plates, mounted on card with green decorative borders. Numerous b/w illustrations. Spine and corners bumped. Some very light rubbing to covers. A few foxspots/fingermarks else contents clean. All plates present, 2 have corner creases.

Numerous b/w illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Top edge gilt. lx and 256 pages. Covers are unevenly browned. A few chips and nicks at cloth; with a little fraying in places. Plate to opposite page 27 is MISSING (mounting card and tissue-guard are still present, but plate no longer there). Some foxing and page browning.

Tiny dents to edges of rear cover which is also slightly warped. Inscription in ink to verso of front free-endpaper. Joint between endpaper and half-title is cracked. Heavy foxing to contents and some hinges cracked. Otherwise clean.

All edges gilt. Spine bumped and cloth faded but gilt remains fairly bright. Corners are bumped and rubbed. Couple of little bumps to board edges. Some marks to covers. Both joints are cracked showing webbing beneath but binding remains firm. Dated inscription in ink to half-title page. Foxing to endpapers and some pages otherwise contents are clean. Plates are all present and in very good condition.
