THE WATERING PLACES OF GREAT BRITAIN AND FASHIONABLE DIRECTORY ILLUSTRATED WITH VIEWS
No author listed. Illustrated by W.H. Bartlett.
Stock no. 1806586
Published by I.T. Hinton. 1831. Almost very good condition.
Large format. Three-quarters leather binding with gilt title to spine and marbled paper boards. Marbled endpapers. Engraved title page plus 30 engraved plates. Engraving by J.C. Allen. Edges rubbed, corners worn with some loss to leather at sides. Boards rubbed/scuffed. Front joint cracked, broken at bottom edge where leather has worn away from spine. Rear joint is sound. Some foxing present. Plate opposite page 149 is torn almost right across at the lower margin of the plate not affecting the plate itself. A few other plates may have small closed margin tears. Most plates have browning to margins of page. It is possible that there is a page or more missing at the end although the book appears to be complete in itself - the last printed page number is 216 and this ends partway through a sentence. Overall, a good working copy.
Green cloth, gilt titles and decorations to front cover. Gilt title to spine. 20 b/w plates, 2 maps and numerous wood engravings in text. Rebacked with original lightly browned spine laid down. Corners bumped and rubbed. A few scattered foxspots throughout.
Large format. 11 x 8". Two volumes in one. Full brown diced calf binding, gilt titles and decorations to spine. 118 b/w plates plus vignette (lacks portrait of Mr. Willis). 170 pages + 186 pages. Marbled endpapers. Front board detached. Board edges worn. Covers scuffed. Bookplate of Francis T. Touzel of Jersey on front pastedown. Foxing throughout. Pages 173-178 of volume II have been bound in upside down and back to front (pages run from 172-178, 173-179). Rear joint a little fragile from the outside - leather split, else binding of contents is nice tight. A good candidate for rebinding.
