Very good condition. A Narrative of the Building and a Description of the Construction of the Edystone (sic) Lighthouse With Stone: To Which is Subjoined an Appendix Giving Some Account of the Lighthouse on the Spurn Point Built Upon a Sand. By John Smeaton, Civil Engineer, F.R.S. The Second Edition. Very large format, 22.5 x 15.75 inches. Black leather spine and corners. Gilt title to spine. Brown cloth boards. xiv + 198 pages. 23 superb b/w plates. John Smeaton modelled the shape of the lighthouse on an oak tree and built it of granite blocks. He pioneered a concrete that will set under water and developed a technique of securing the granite blocks using dovetail joints and marble dowels. His lighthouse was removed and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe as a memorial in 1877. Due to the size of this book, if posted, it will need to be sent via courier and may incur extra shipping costs.
Contents rebound expertly with new endpapers. Boards a little marked. Some foxing. Some damp marks to lower gutter edge of plates. All plates present. Still a very nice copy of a scarce item.
