  • Bunter finds out that Lord Mauleverer had been invited by Vernon-Smith for a car ride - to begin at midnight. Mauly was kept in his bed by Harry Wharton and Bunter was able to take his place. By the time Vernon-Smith finds out who his companion is it is to late to send him back. But the joy-ride came to a sudden and calamitous end with a long and weary trudge back to school. Others were out that night, including a person known as Gentleman Charlie who had designs on a famous ruby in Hogben Grange. The two parties met and the situation became more complicated involving a number of missing articles, Thanks to the Bounder the missing ruby was found though Bunter as usual attempted to claim the credit.
