This celebrated study offers a reinterpretation of the writings and attitudes of Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon (1609–74), best known for his History of the Rebellion and the Civil War and his autobiography, which presents an excellent record of the English Civil War. Blue cloth boards, gilt title to spine. xii and 330 pages including index. SIGNED by the author (no dedication) to title page. Boards are a little faded and scuffed, spine is faded and mottled, gilt title to spine has rubbed off over time. Text block browned. Lengthy gift inscription in ink to front endpaper. A few foxspots present mainly to endpapers and prelims. One hinge pulled but binding overall is tight.
