Or, Manifestations of the Divine Wisdom in the Natural History of Animals. The greatest part of this book was originally published in the form of successive papers in "Excelsior." Several entire chapters have been added to make the survey of the animate creation more complete, and the whole haws been carefully revised. Green cltoh boards, gitl title and vignettes to spine, vignette of large bowl with a fish inside to front board. Title to spine is 'Life by P.H. Gosse'. B/w plates and illustrations to text. viii and 363 pages including index. Spine browned, split & worn at edges. Corners rubbed and worn. Contemporary inscription in ink to front endpaper and name in pencil. Joints split, cracked to bottom, starting to come unstuck from spine. Text block browned. Prelims almost detached. A few pencil annotations (underlining), grubby marks and some foxing. A good working copy, sold with all faults.

Green cloth boards, gilt title to spine, gilt vignette of monkey and boys to front board. 12 b/w illustrations, drawn by Wolf and engraved by Whymper. xiv and 372 pages including index, 4 pages of publisher adverts to rear. Spine & corners ligthly rubbed & worn. New endpapers. Illustrations contents page detached but present. Contents are tight but grubby. All plates present. A decent copy for its age.

Spine and title to spine is faded, spine and corners worn with a little fraying, Boards marked. Front joint starting to crack. Glue binding has dried out and therefore the pages are liable to come loose/detached. Preface page is detached at time of description. A few marks to contents. A good reading copy.

Boards lightly marked, light fading to top margin of rear board. Spine slightly cocked. Text block browned. Endpapers marked with age, front endpaper has an area where a label has been removed and so the colour is less faded in this rectangle. Page browning. A nice copy considering its age!
