Benjamin Jowett, although never debunked as such by Lytton Strachey, was nothing if not an Eminent Victorian: English scholar, classicist and theologian, and Master of Balliol College. First published in 1957, Geoffrey Faber's biography still holds its own. This is the second and revised edition. Dark red cloth boards, gilt title to spine. A few b/w illustrations. 456 pages including index. Top & tail of spine lightly shelf-rubbed. Boards clean. Light browning to text block. Endpapers browned. Inscription in ink to front endpaper. Contents otherwise clean. Blue dustwrapper is lightly worn at top & tail of spine, browned with some foxing, small closed tear to top rear corner.

Generally a very nice copy.

Green cloth boards, gilt title to spine, gilt vignette of monkey and boys to front board. 12 b/w illustrations, drawn by Wolf and engraved by Whymper. xiv and 372 pages including index, 4 pages of publisher adverts to rear. First series, second impression. Boards are rubbed, grubby, and edge-worn. Joints cracked and starting to split. Front endpaper removed, to 1.5" of half-title page removed (not affecting the title). Hinges pulled but binding is still holding. A little foxing and a few grubby marks to contents. Plate opposite page 358 (plate XII - The Sea-Serpent) has some red marks and discolouration. A good working copy, sold with all faults.

Vertical board edges are worn, board exposed. Foxing and grubby marks to contents. Some hinges pulled but binding is tight. A good working copy.

College stamp to fly-leaf and verso of rear endpaper. A few foxspots and light browning, most plates affected by foxing.

Re-backed with original spine laid down. Front pastedown has a couple of small chips, endpapers have a few minor marks. A few margin marks and foxspots. All plates present, colours vivid and bright. One plate has a margin crease. A nice copy considering its age.

Top & tail of spine and corners lightly rubbed. Text block browned. Top of title page has been cut off and is missing but does not affect the title itself. Some light page browning. Rear endpapers a little grubby. Overall a decent copy.
