TRAVELS IN THE NORTH
Written by Karel Capek.
Illustrated by Karel Capek.
Stock no. 1830299
Published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd..
1939.
Almost very good condition in a almost very good dustwrapper.
Capek travelled north beyond the Arctic Circle because he wanted to see at last the lands of his boyish dreams, and of his life-long friends, Kierkegaard, Jacobsen, and others, and also because the silvery and cool birch trees, the aconites, the moss, and the sparkling waters appeal to him strongly. He tells of his impressions in the generous style of a smiling philosopher and there is a great mellowness and depth in his observations. Yellow cloth boards, silver title to spine. Colour frontis and b/w line drawings throughout. 269 pages plus publisher adverts to rear. Third impression in the same year as first impression. Spiner and horizontal edges of boards browned and a few foxspots. Heavy foxing to text block and some foxing to contents. Pictorial dustwrapper is edge-worn with a few small chips, browned to spine, small foxspots present.

The manor house at Hex, known locally in Belgium as Castle Hex, was built around the end of the 18th century by the then Prince-Bishop of Liege, Francois-Charles de Velbruck, as a summer residence and hunting lodge. The house is built in a style transitional between rococo and classical, with the gardens combining French formality with an English-style landscaped park beyond, to make a truly Arcadian setting. Here, the development of the house and grounds is revealed from its inception, through the wars and upheaval s of the 19th and 20th centuries, up to the present day. Large format. Green cloth boards, gilt titles. Colour photos. 223 pages including index. ISBN: 9789061537465. A lovely copy.
