THE WOMAN IN BLACK
by Susan Hill
Illustrated by John Lawrence
Published by Hamish Hamilton Ltd. 1st. 1983
Very good condition in a very good dustwrapper. The author has breathed new life and new death into the genre of the ghost story, a brilliant exercise in atmosphere and controlled horror. Arthur Kipps relates his haunting experiences at Eel Marsh House. The tale begins on Christmas Eve, when Arthur's step-children invite him to tell a ghost story. Arthur is too disturbed by his memories to share his story aloud, so he writes it down. Green boards with gilt title to spine. B/w illustrations. 160 pages.
Light discolouration to spine and board edges. Lower board edges have a minor stain. Contents clean. Pictorial dustwrapper is lightly rubbed at corners, faded to spine with surface paper loss towards the top affecting the 'usa' of Susan. Tiny closed tears to top edges.
