- On her way back to England from New Zealand, Grizel Cochrane, one of the earliest of the 'Old Girls' of the Chalet School, arrives at Freudesheim depressed and embittered. She finds that Joey Maynard has arranged a reunion for as many as possible of their contemporaries during the school's first year in the Tirol and the arrival of her old friends at the Gornetz Platz begins to give Grizel new interests in life. The companionship, excitements, adventures and even near tragedies of the house-party soon help Grizel to forget the sadness of her past, but she has to suffer a great deal before Joey's hopes for the happiness of her old school friends are soon realised.
