Oman covers the castles of the Thames Valley, the West Country, the West Midlands, the Welsh Marches and Wales itself, some eighty in all, both intact and ruined. He explains the origins of castles, their purpose, use and roles in history. Black cloth spine, gilt title. Burgundy boards with gilt title to front board. 2 colour plates, numerous b/w illustrations. Fold-out map of Great Western Railway showing Cathedrals, Castles, & Abbeys of England and Wales in pocket to rear pastedown. xii and 229 pages plus index. Corners of boards lightly rubbed and worn. A few minor marks to boards. Text block browned, endpapers and page edges browned. Else contents clean. Map present in rear pocket. Two dustwrappers are present - one plain, one decorative, both have chips to corners and top & tail of spine. Strong cigarette odour present.

Sketches of early Scotch history and social progress. Originally read in the shape of Lectures to a University class. Burgundy cloth boards, gilt title to spine and vignette to front board. One colour map and two b/w maps. xliii and 368 pages including index. Spine sunned/faded and worn at top & tail. Corners of boards lightly rubbed. Previous owner's contemporary bookplate to front pastedown. Hinges pulled. A few margin marks, foxspots to maps. Three maps present. A decent copy for a book of its age!

Browning to lower 2" of spine (where piece is missing from dustwrapper). Inscription in ink to verso of front free-endpaper. Foxing and some finger but contents generally clean. Price-cut wrapper is badly worn and torn with extensive tape repairs on verso, lower 2" of wapper spine is missing. A decent first edition in a poor wrapper.

Red boards, black titles, blue and white pictorial endpapers, two-tone & b/w illustrations. Second impression. Spine bumped. Covers slightly dusty to front, marked to rear. Some slight foxing else contents are clean. Two page corners are creased (where book page has been used as a bookmark). Dustwrapper has a large section missing from across top of both panels and spine, remains of wrapper is slightly edge worn.

One page had lower corner torn off and is now held in place with aging sellotape. Some foxing and fingering but contents otherwise generally clean.
