A fable of war and peace, the story of a people so transformed and disfigured by hate that at one point Steadman actually considered drawing masks on the to hide their ugliness. The idea was disgarded when he came to draw the enemy and found that he could not - the enemy didn't exist. Based on a story told to Steadman by Dimitri Sidjanski. Large format. White boards with black silhouette to front cover. Colour illustrations. Not paginated. ISBN: 0448229781. SIGNED by the artist to title-page with a small doodle to the cannon illustration. Small nibble patch to base of spine of book. Ink (biro) 2.00 written to top corner of front free-endpaper. Some loss to lower spine corner of front panel of wrapper (where it was nibbled). Dustwrapper is lightly browned, some lifting of laminate at lower edge of front panel.

A Doomful Tale of Hope or A Hopeful Tale of Doom. Driver Grope drove a stream engine. He and his train were greatly loved by everyone, people came from miles around to have a ride with him, because his train was clean and comfortable, if old-fashioned. As time went by, more and more of the people who used to ride on Driver Grope's train bought motor-cars and few and fewer of them would visit. But there came a time when there were so many motor-cars on the road that there was no room for them to move. An then, of course, everyone.... perhaps the reader should see for himself why Driver Grope who had retired unhappily to potter in his garden, was asked to drive his train again. Large format. Blue cloth boards, red title to spine. Colour illustrations. ISBN: 0234779020. SIGNED by author to title page. Top edge of boards a little discoloured. Some foxing to endpapers.
