This is one of fifty hard-bound with hand-coloured illustrations. The author & artist travels to New Zealand, the birth-place of his mother. Poems and b/w illustrations as well as a few hand-coloured illustrations. Oblong format. Beige cloth spine with white title label, grey paper boards with white title label. Not paginated. ISBN: 0948021322. SIGNED by the author and numbered 38 (of 50) to rear. Gift inscription to half-title page also from the author. A few light foxspots to text block. Boards a little grubby. Contents clean.

Capek travelled north beyond the Arctic Circle because he wanted to see at last the lands of his boyish dreams, and of his life-long friends, Kierkegaard, Jacobsen, and others, and also because the silvery and cool birch trees, the aconites, the moss, and the sparkling waters appeal to him strongly. He tells of his impressions in the generous style of a smiling philosopher and there is a great mellowness and depth in his observations. Yellow cloth boards, silver title to spine. Colour frontis and b/w line drawings throughout. 269 pages plus publisher adverts to rear. Third impression in the same year as first impression. Spiner and horizontal edges of boards browned and a few foxspots. Heavy foxing to text block and some foxing to contents. Pictorial dustwrapper is edge-worn with a few small chips, browned to spine, small foxspots present.

Boards lightly marked, light fading to top margin of rear board. Spine slightly cocked. Text block browned. Endpapers marked with age, front endpaper has an area where a label has been removed and so the colour is less faded in this rectangle. Page browning. A nice copy considering its age!

Spine browned, boards very grubby, corners bent. Name in ink to front endpaper. Joints just starting to split. Page browning, some foxing, one page has vertical edge crease. Small damp stain to prelims at lower gutter edges. A scarce item.
