Skara Brae is a stone-built Neolithic settlement located along the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland, Orkney. The site was discovered following a storm exposing the presence of stone structures within the coastal sand dunes. Childe, who would be the first to admit he was better at writing than digging, which he loathed, excavated carefully, acknowledging the work of every digger involved in the process of carefully examining and cataloguing the site. Three-quarters burgundy leather (spine & corners), boards are dark burgundy cloth. All edges mottled red. xlv and 542 pages. Leather spine is rubbed and faded. Boards scuffed. Leather corners worn at edges. Rear board has fading to lower third. Bookplate for 'Jas Jones H.M. Customs, London' and dated 1873 in ink has been unsuccessfully removed from front pastedown. Relevant newspaper cuttings glued to front endpapers and prelims as well as some annotation. Name in ink to title page. Title page has surface paper damage to top margin with small closed tear. Some foxing throughout and a few grubby marks. Binding is tight.
