The book is a study of a major eighteenth-century factory between the years 1768-82, of the methods by which ornaments were designed, made and marketed and of Boulton's own keen interest in promoting the business. Top edge of boards and text block lightly foxed. Bookplate of Geoffrey & Elspeth Howe to front pastedown. Small hole in the midle of the text to page 79/80 (see photo) else contents clean. Bells, of both Eastern and Western origin, reached a first peak in Europe during the Middle Ages, as swinging-bells. These were also used for peals: a rhythmical play of soundds achieved with the help of clappers - the origin of what is now the manually played carillon. During the second half of the 14th century tower-clocks were installed everywhere and these not only gave the hour-strikes but also played a melody on a few small bells, later to become chimes.
