The chapters cover aspects of St Helena's history from its discovery in the 1950s, including sixteenth and seventeenth century visitors and surgeons, East Indis shipping, the island's Huguenots and Baptists, telegraphs, and the Napoleonic period, island merchants, horse racing, Darwin and other natural historians, church memorials, photography and publishing, as well as St Helena's role as a whaling port and coaling station. Very good condition.
The author was commissioned as the official painter for the US Navy. Blue cloth boards, blue titles and vignette to front. 17 b/w drawings. xii and 48 pages. Boards a little grubby, lightly rubbed at edges, corners of boards bumped, white marks to top of rear board. Endpapers and text block browned, endpapers also grubby. Hinges pulled and a few minor margin marks present.
