AICHI D3A1/2 VAL (CROWOOD AVIATION SERIES)
Written by Peter C. Smith.
Stock no. 1329444
Published by The Crowood Press. 1st 1999. Fine condition in a fine dustwrapper.

The Aichi D3A1/2 Val was designed to specification 11-Shi in 1936 as a replacement for the Aichi D21A2 biplane. Chief designer Tokuhishiro Gomei designed an aeroplane that was easy to produce and rugged. Powered by a Nakajima Hikari 1, a 730hp nine-cylinder radial, the prototype flew in January 1938. It featured a fixed undercarriage, whose drag penalty was offset by its simplicity and lighter weight, and in other respects it was clearly influenced by the Heinkel He 70. Production versions were powered by a Nakajima Kinsei 43 of l,000hp and were capable of carrying a 250kg bomb beneath the centre fuselage and a 60kg bomb under each wing. Large format. Black boards, gilt title to spine. B/w photos. ISBN: 1861262787. A super copy, looks unread.

A Schiffer Military History Book. After a promising beginning as the Royal Naval Air Service in World War I, the Fleet Air Arm, also known as 'The Air Branch of the Royal Navy', became a military 'football' passed around betwen its parent service and the Royal Air Force under whose operational control it fell from 1918-1937. By 1943, with the provision of superior carrier aircraft designs and a similar whole sale expansion in Fleet and Escort carriers, as well as the personnel with which to operate the warships and aircraft, the Fllet Air Arm was an all-round, efficient Force.
