Concentrating mainly on fifteenth century, a period when standing armies emerged in Italy and when the 'modern' trends were just as discernible here as elsewhere in Europe. Also looking back to the middle ages and the fourteenth century and then forward to the Italian Wars (1494-1530) when foreign armies disputed the European balance of power on Italian soil. Burgundy cloth boards, gilt title to spine. B/w illustrations. ISBN: 0370105028. Large bookplate to front pastedown. Top edge of text block lightly faded. Contents clean. Blue dustwrapper is browned to spine and top edge, slightly grubby.
