• The story of Antonia, who is eleven, and her brother John, who go to spend the summer with their cousins Angus and Morag and Hamish in the highlands of Scotland. Their adventures begin on the night train on the way up, and after that it is one thrill after another, and one scrape after another. They take the boat across the loch to an island and get stranded there; they catch a burglar hiding in the heather; they have a tremendous (and of course victorious) feud with another clan; they get chased by a bull; they pledge themselves to finding the long-lost cave in which the MacAlisters and their treasure had been buried by their enemies - nobody thinks they'll find it, but they do, while all the grown-ups are still looking in the wrong place.
