- Ricky was twelve when he trespassed in a bomb-damaged house and, unknown to his family, painted and furnished a room there. Then he met William - a man who worked in winter and became a tramp in summer.
- Disaster took Ricky's room from him. But that summer he spent a holiday with William walking from Wells to Gloucester by way of Wookey Hole, Cheddar, Bath, Chipping Sodbury and Painswick. They collected on their way Patsy, a young maths mistress, Michel, a French boy, and Simon from the West Indies. They earned money by pea-picking, slept wherever they could (and sometimes in the open), learnt a lot about England, made many friends and met with trouble which nearly upset all their plans.
