  • On the moors above Haverston there is a mysterious beast at large, savagely attacking livestock on the surrounding farms and giving rise to rumours and fears. The morale of the close-knit Haverston community is already at a low ebb as the local mill faces closure, and the spectre of unemployment becomes first a growing menace, and then a terrible reality, affecting every family in the district.
  • Billy is deeply affected by the events of the winter and by the strain which hardship and the prospect of a bleak future places on all relationships. Somehow the unknown beast roaming the moors is a symbol of all the turmoil and Billy determines that he will track it down and kill it. In a devastating climax, Billy faces a terrifying challenge, alone on the moors, with no possibility of knowing what the eventual outcome will be.
