  • Murder at a masque! It seemed impossible to believe, but Sir Renold Mandeville and his friends knew that it was all horribly likely.
  • There had already been an attempt to kill Lord Ravenwood, Mandeville's boyhood friend. The quick wits of Mandeville's secretary had largely foiled that. It seemed to be a new outbreak of an old quarrel between two families on the Welsh border.
  • However, Lord Ravenwood had political ambitions. He could see that the King, Charles I, had few competent advisers about him, and no-one who could tell him what the country people felt. Ravenwood was determined to be that man, and inviting the King to a masque was only part of his plan to join the King's advisers. But events took a sinister turn....
