Contents

  • Joan Warner was openly doubtful when her brother Alan and his friend David Grantham made up their minds to spend a week of the summer holidays in London with Stuart Grantham the naturalist. (Both boys were keen cricketers and had set their hearts on watching the Third Test Match between England and Australia). 'David's uncles just aren't to be trusted,' she said. 'You'll only get into trouble.'
  • Joan was right but then how were the boys - or Uncle Stuart- to know that their visit was to coincide with the presence of film star Madeleine de Missma at the Grand Hotel, Mayfair? Or that her famous and valuable diamond necklace would attract the professional eye of a certain gentleman who called himself The Beetle and who ruled his gang of crooks, crib-crackers and confidence men with a rod of iron?
  • How the boys - and for that matter the Bandicoots- became involved with the burglars and what happens, readers must discover for themselves.
