Good condition.
With a Short View of the Reigns of Edward I; Edward II; and Edward II; and a Summary Account of the Institution of the Order of the Garter. Full leather binding, gilt title to spine. Marbled endpapers. B/w frontis. xvi and 352 pages. All edges red. Front board detached. Boards scuffed, corners worn, top of spine worn. Small patch of loss to leather spine. Bookplate of Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy to front pastedown - the eldest son of Mark Beaufoy the astronomer. Prelims badly bound in i.e. glued too far in. This leads to tearing and creasing of front hinge between title page and frontis (it is possible that the prelims have been glued in such a fashion to help hold the book together but it does make a bit of a mess to the prelims). 'Introduction' written in ink above the Introduction page xiii (also imprinted to facing page). Light page browning and scattered foxing throughout. A few old grubby marks to margins. Overall, a good working copy.

Stock no. 1831316
Published by Faber & Faber.

1993.
Slightly better than very good condition in a very good dustwrapper.
Biography of the author, Elizabeth Gaskell. This is the story of a woman and a writer, not a matron, who had a compulsive 'habit of stories', and 'could write anywhere, under any conditions'. And what she wrote of “political and industrial unrest, crime and illegitimacy, a tribe of Amazons making do without men in Cranford, a tragic and scandal-tinged biography of Charlotte Bront“ was far from women's proper literary sphere of domestic realism, though Gaskell explored this too in her last novel, Wives and Daughters. Green cloth boards, cream title to spine. A few b/w illustrations. xiii and 690 pages including index. ISBN: 0571151825. Light vertical reading crease to spine. Boards clean. Text block lightly browned and a small mark to lower edge. Inscription in ink to front endpaper. Light page browning. Else contents clean. Pictorial dustwrapper is lightly rubbed at corners, slight sunning/fading to spine, light scuffing to rear panel.
