British Guiana has been called the Land of Six Peoples, from the six different races that have their homes there. Much of the country is inaccessible and all but five per cent of the population live on a narrow coastal belt, reclaimed from the swamp and lyuing below high-tide level. The greater part of this book deals with life on the coast, its customs, its turbulent politics, and the linked problems of its economy and social welfare. The author has also visited the Interior, travelling by plane, river-steamer, jeep, and dug-out canoe and on foot, observing the simple lives of the Amerindians.
