A novel based in West Cumberland. Terracotta cloth boards, blue title to spine and vignette to front board. 254 pages. Boards clean. Text block browned. Some foxing present, mainly to endpapers and text block. Pictorial dustwrapper is edge-worn with a few small closed edge-tears, worn at corners, a little grubby to rear panel.

Includes John Forster's Essay on The Vicar of Wakefield. xli + 260 pages. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. This is copy no. 205. Spine and corners are bumped. Spine is frayed at top and bottom. Cloth is grubby and spine is browned. Foxing throughout. Front joint between endpaper and fly-leaf is cracked.

Top edge gilt. Spine lightly faded, gilt titles still bright. Corners lightly rubbed. Prelims browned. Half-title page has a diagonal crease. Some hinges pulled but binding is tight. Page 105 has large grubby mark to lower half (not affecting text). Some pages remain uncut. A few marks to contents but generally a nice copy.
