The first full-length novel featuring Peter Pan who originally appeared in a section of J.M. Barrie's The Little White Bird. A successful play was staged in 1904 entitled Peter Pan Or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Following the success of the play Hodder & Stoughton extracted a number of chapters from The Little White Bird and republished them with illustrations by Arthur Rackham with the title Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens. It wasn't until 1911 that the play was adapted and expanded to novel length and this is the offering we have here. The binding is dark green cloth with gilt titles to spine a white decorative border to front cover with a white vignette showing Peter Pan with two mermaids and the crocodile. The book is beautifully illustrated in b/w by Bedford with a title page, frontis and 11 other plates (13 plates in total). 267 pages. Printed by T. & A. Constable, Edinburgh. Spine and corners are bumped and rubbed. Covers slightly marked. Gilt publisher name to base of spine has faded. Front joint is cracked showing webbing. Some of the plates are loose but all are present. Some hinges cracked. There is foxing throughout. Top edge of textblock is a bit dusty.
