  • To Edwin, crouched shyly behind the woodpile in the feast-hall, Aethelfrith, the Grey Wolf, represents all that is heroic in the English kingdoms of Britain. At twenty-six his name is known from coast to coast and already he is celebrated in song.
  • So Edwin's pride knows no bounds when Aelhelfrith makes him the gift of a sword - a gift of the kind only kings could give; a gift for for a king.
  • But peace is transient in the 7th century and no man involved with the Grey Wolf is safe from treachery. Years later Edwin must face flight and exile before he, himself, can become king; the hardship of battle before he can unite Britain in a way the country has never knwon before.
