Welcome to the July 2025 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
The lovely weather we mentioned we'd been enjoying last month has continued here in the UK - there is now talk of water shortages and hosepipe bans! But it's been lovely to enjoy the sunshine - we don't seem to get a huge amount of it here! Speaking of which, as we write this, we've had our first day of rain in what seems like weeks!
The good weather has been great for local events. In particular, the Falconry at the Abbey event last weekend was a great success and well worth the entry fee. It's running again in August and October. Highly recommended - and could be combined with a visit to our ornithology section?
In our article this month, Sonia takes a look at famous children's author Eleanor Farjeon. Although possibly best known for Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard, she was a prolific writer throughout her life. For the gardeners among you, our featured book this month is about famous English landscape gardener 'Capability' Brown. Lisa dives into Dorothy Stroud's book on the great man. Enjoy!

Her mother, Maggie, left the upbringing of the children to her eldest son. Harry had a fertile imagination, he loved rules and organising things. Eleanor was closest to Harry and enjoyed a game of ‘Tar’ with him which allowed her to escape realism and played a part in delaying her move into maturity.

As it was a lovely day we decided to visit a National Trust property. The one we chose was Croome Court in Worcestershire which consists of a mid-18th century Neo-Palladian mansion, RAF museum, a church, follies and landscaped gardens. As we entered the grounds, the first thing we noticed was how similar the grounds were to that of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. We were later told that it was Capability Brown who had designed them both. Therefore, not knowing too much about Capability Brown I wondered if we had any books in our shop about him and came across this one, Capability Brown by Dorothy Stroud.
Dorothy Stroud was born in London in 1910 and was a garden and landscape architectural historian...
