June 2021 Newsletter

Welcome to the June 2021 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and well. With restrictions gradually easing, we also hope you've been able to take advantage of the recent good weather - whilst of course still making time for reading!

Everything has been pretty quiet here at the shop. We are enjoying the peace and quiet after recent building work - although we do have more work scheduled for later in July! On the book buying front, we have again been purchasing lots of Folio Society books; so keep an eye on our website if these interest you.

Nicky takes a fascinating dive into history this month with her article on Napoleon. We recently bought a small collection of books dealing with Napoleon and the Battle of Waterloo, so if this article interests you follow the links within it to see our current stock. Theresa's chosen book for this month's featured book is 'World Tree Story' - a look at the oldest, most historically significant and most impressive tress on this planet! Full of interesting photographs, the article (and the book!) are well worth a read. We hope you enjoy the newsletter!

Napoleon contributed by Nicky

One of the songs we were taught at primary school was “Boney was a warrior” the lyrics of which taught me very little about Napoleon and left me fairly unmoved by the last verse which finished with “Boney broke his heart and died”. What I have learned over the years has been from the British perspective and there are several myths and half truths that are passed on, just as with many historical figures.

After a crushing defeat at Waterloo Napoleon abdicated and the British sent him in exile to St Helena – one of the remotest places on Earth where they almost certainly thought he would be forgotten. They were wrong. He died on the island at age 51 and a mere nineteen years after his death the French people brought his body back to Paris where he was given a magnificent funeral.

World Tree Story – History and Legends of the World’s Ancient Trees By Julian Hight contributed by Theresa

World Tree Story – History and Legends of the World’s Ancient Trees by Julian Hight

This book caught my eye as I am in the process of growing an oak tree in my garden. Last September/October I came across an initiative from BBC Radio Gloucestershire called ‘Ourboretum’ whereby you grow an Oak, Hazelnut or Beech tree until it is a small sapling and then they will arrange for it to be replanted. It is too late to join the scheme now as the seeds had to be collected last October and planted then. My sapling is now approximately 4cm high and my husband and I are incredibly proud!
