December 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the December 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope you and your families are keeping well and staying safe despite the ongoing pandemic. December is always a busy month for us as we deal with the inevitable - and much appreciated - Christmas rush. Although last postage dates are somewhat uncertain at the moment, there should still be time to order books and have them arrive in time for the big day. Please see our home page for a full list of approximate last posting dates.

Sonia has written our article this month, looking back on what has been a crazy year for Stella Books. It started with floods, was followed by the ongoing saga of COVID-19, and not to forget our ongoing attempts to repair the damage from the floods!

We recently purchased an exceptionally rare book by Rev. W. Awdry - a first edition of his first book: The Three Railway Engines. It seemed like an obvious choice for our featured book this month. Even if it's out of your price range, we hope you find the article and photos interesting. Enjoy!

That Was 2020 That Was… contributed by Sonia

Wow! What a year! So many things have happened… well, two main things but it seems like a lot!

The evening of March 11th 2020 saw extremely high Spring Tides in Tintern resulting in the River Wye, which flows opposite our shop, deciding it was going to overflow its banks and the road, and come into the building and browse our shelves! Prior to this, we did have a flood alert from the Environmental Agency and we had prepared ourselves. The flood boards were in place and books were moved from floor level to shelves to higher up. This we thought would be enough and, anyway, the river was highly unlikely to enter the building - wasn’t it?

The Three Railway Engines by Rev. W. Awdry contributed by Maria

The Three Railway Engines by Rev. W. Awdry

This is the very first title in the popular Railway Series and was originally published in 1945. There are 42 titles in the series, 26 of which were written by Rev. W. Awdry and a further 16 which were written by his son, Christopher.

Nearly all the stories within The Railway Series books were based on real-life events. Rev. Awdry was a lifelong railway enthusiast and he was keen that his stories should be as realistic as possible. The engine characters were generally based on real classes of locomotives and some of the railways were based upon real railway lines within the British Isles.
