May 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the May 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

Once again, we hope this newsletter finds you and your families safe and well. It's been yet another crazy month; we're going to have to redefine what's normal very soon! But despite the craziness, we're still here and are as busy as ever.

Orders have continued to flow in at a very healthy rate - for which we are very grateful. Clearly, lots of people are doing the sensible thing and staying home with a good book! We are still running reduced staff levels with some staff reducing their hours or working from home in order to keep themselves and loved ones safe. This has given us the opportunity to do some 'data clean-up' - particularly with customer 'wants' - as this work can be done remotely. We endeavour to record any 'wants' that our customers give us on our internal systems. The idea being that when a book comes into stock, an email or letter is automatically generated. This doesn't always work - a lot depends on us fully understanding exactly what the customer wants and entering it accurately. So it's been good to go back through older wants and see if we can tweak them so as to increase the chances of a match. So, if you have any particular book wants, send us an email at interests@stellabooks.com.

Despite the reduced staff, we have still been able to get most orders dispatched the day they are received. We do still have to drop the parcels off at the local sorting office the following morning - so there is still a slight delay over normal service.

We will keep posting any updates on the home page of our website so please keep an eye on this. Due to our reduced staff, we'd still appreciate if any enquiries could be sent via email - answering the phone can be a little challenging at the moment.

We hope this newsletter gives you a little escape from the current situation. Maria has written an interesting article reminiscing over her childhood annuals, and Theresa has chosen the beautiful 'Tennyson’s Guinevere and Other Poems' as the featured book this month. Enjoy!

Children’s Annuals contributed by Maria

As a child (too long ago now) I remember being so happy to receive book tokens at Christmas time. I would save them until the New Year and then use them to buy as many annuals as I possibly could in the sales. Usually one or two of the girls annuals (such as Bunty for Girls or June for Girls) and of course a copy of the most popular annual of all – The Beano Annual.

One of the first English annuals to actually have the word ‘annual’ within its title is “Child Companion Annual” first published in 1824. As with most children’s books from the Victorian era, the stories within were told to provide morals for the children that read them. The over-pious Chatterbox Annual arrived in 1867 and, by the turn of the century, was published in two editions...

Tennyson’s Guinevere and Other Poems contributed by Theresa

Tennyson’s Guinevere and Other Poems

Written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.Illustrated by Florence HarrisonPublished by Blackie and Son Ltd Deluxe 1st edition 1912

If we think of the Golden Age of illustrators, we tend to think of luminaries such as Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac. However amongst these illustrators of the Golden Age we also find women illustrators such as Kate Greenaway, Jessie Willcox Smith and Florence Harrison to name but a few, no less talented, but perhaps less sung about. So this is what initially led me to my choice of book, which is quite beautiful in every way.
