April 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to the April 2023 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

The bluebells are just starting to emerge from winter hibernation in the Wye Valley - the woods will soon be carpeted in these beautiful blue flowers. The Wireworks bridge is still not quite open - the latest news says that it will be open at the end of April.

The recent high tides tested our new flood boards. We're pleased to report that they worked very well! See our photo of the month for a sense of how high the water came! On a side note, our webcam is now working again after a few technical issues!

Our building work nears completion. The new desk is complete, and we've started to put the bookcases back in the room. We just have a bit of carpentry and general odds and ends to complete before reopening. We're hopeful that we'll be able to reopen on May 1st. Keep an eye on the website home page for confirmation!

New Desk with Books

After recently buying a collection of books with pictorial bindings, Maria's article explores these beautiful books in a bit more detail. Meanwhile Jo takes a look at a classic children's book for our featured book - Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne. Enjoy!

Pictorial Bindings contributed by Maria

Having recently purchased a large collection of children’s books with pictorial bindings I would like to tell you about them.

What do we mean when we talk about pictorial bindings? Frequently found on children’s books the cloth bindings are stamped in different colours and in many cases embellished with gilt. While pictorial bindings became very popular during the Victorian period with the Art Noveau movement...

Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne contributed by Joanne

Now We Are Six’ was first published in 1927 and is the third title in the Pooh bear quartet, after 'When We Were Very Young' (1924), 'Winnie-the-Pooh' (1926) and before 'The House At Pooh Corner' (1928). It is the second in the series that is a collection of poetry and rhymes for children and contains a total of 35 different poems – some more well-known than others. Perhaps this is partly why some say that this is their least favourite book of the four.

Many of the verses feature Christopher Robin, but only two (that I could see) feature the much-loved Winnie-the-Pooh, specifically, 'Us Two' and 'The Friend'. He does, however, keep popping up in the E.H. Shepard illustrations that accompany eleven of the poems.
