Very good condition. Series one to five. Each volume has attractive blue cloth with elaborate gilt decorations to front cover and spine. Front covers have attractive inset flower collages. 40 beautiful chromolithograph plates to each volume. All edges gilt. The first two volumes are published by Casell, Petter, Galpin and the remaining three by Cassell & Company (the publisher changed their name in 1883).
Spines and corners of each volume are slightly bumped. Covers are in different states of brightness and colour, rear cover of volume 3 is slightly grubby. There is some fading to the cover edges. A couple of the volumes have previous owner's name and address in ink to front fly-leaf. One plate in volume 3 has a tiny piece of the lower corner neatly torn off (no loss of the actual picture - just plain paper), there is also a small tear to the edge of the frontis of this volume. There is foxing to the textblocks and page margins and the tissue-guards are browned/foxed. A very attractive set (scarce to have 5 volumes together), all plates collated.
