- Term time at Greyfriars and the fattest figure in the Remove was in a revengeful frame of mind. He unsuccessfully attempted to rag old Quelch. Rude notes in Latin appeared on the form master's desk, booby traps lay round every corner but each time Bunter left an unmistakable clue to his identity.
- Smithy, too was in dire trouble - pocket money limited, gated for the term, barred by his only friend Tom Redwing, a vast sum of money owing to Soapy Sanders at the Three Fishers, who placed bets for him on a horse destined to lose.
- It seemed to be the end for Smithy. Tom Redwing had said he would help if needed and now the Bounder of the Remove badly needed help. But Tom was away on special leave and Smithy gated. An unexpected answer appeared in the form of Bunter but only succeeded in landing the bounder in deeper water than before.
