Facsimile edition with introductory booklet in custom made clamshell box. 91 watercolour facsimiles from the Maria Sibylla Merian Collection in the British Museum. Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries' great painters of plants and animals. Limited edition of 1000. A sturdy inner panel holds the commentary volume underneath. This is bound in green cloth and printed on high-quality white laid paper. Julie Harvey of the Entomology Library at the Natural History Museum has written a fascinating introduction to Merian's work, setting it in context and providing an overview of her life and times. All plates present. One tissue guard detached. Foxing to tissue guards. Plates clean except for a very few which have minor foxing at the edges. A bright copy.
