  • The story of Philip, Count of Monte Lucio and his twin brother Hugo. The Changeling, a name given by his enemies to Philip in mockery of his curious appearance and difficult temperament, is a passionate, headstrong character of intelligence and perception. His guardians and relations dislike him and want to depose him and set his twin brother on the throne to fulfil a gypsy's prophecy that the dark one, Hugo, will rule but the fair one, Philip, will attain the greater fame. Hugo is devoted to his brother and gives no countenance to the suggestion. Philip is aware of another plot to oust both brothers from their inheritance. Philip undertakes measures to foil this plot with the help of Richard de Chateaufort and Roger of Windri. The story unfolds in the city of Monte Lucio, Windri Castle and Windri Abbey.
