THE GREMLINS

by Roald Dahl

Illustrated by Walt Disney

Published by Collins. 1st. 1944

Almost very good condition. Dahl's first book for children, inspired directly by his wartime experiences. The story of the mischievous 'little people' who tamper with the RAF's aeroplanes and cause all the breakdowns, faults and crashes that the enemy are usually blamed for. Disney studios provided the illustrations and began to make the film of the book but it was never finished. This is the UK edition published one year after the first US edition. Red pictorial front board, cloth spine. Yellow pictorial endpapers. Delightful richly coloured full-page illustrations plus b/w sketches. 11.25 x 8.75".

Creasing to covers; especially bottom corner of front cover. Spine is unevenly faded with 2.5" split to side; some fraying to cloth. Uneven fading to cover edges. Foxing to endpapers, outer page edges and some page margins. A few other margin marks.

  • The story concerns mischievous mythical creatures, the Gremlins of the title, often invoked by Royal Air Force pilots as an explanation of mechanical troubles and mishaps. In Dahl's book, the gremlins' motivation for sabotaging British aircraft is revenge of the destruction of their forest home, which was razed to make way for an aircraft factory. The principal character in the book, Gus, has his Hawker Hurricane fighter destroyed over the English Channel by a gremlin, but is able to convince the gremlins as they parachute into the water that they should join forces against a common enemy, Hitler and the Nazis, rather than fight each other.
