  • Noel Alleyne and Frank Frayne, both employed at an Aerial Research Establishment, are conducting experiments with an aerial torpedo, intended for mail carrying purposes, to be propelled by a motor taking its power from the electrons of the ether. After a spell of extra hard work their chief gives them a fortnight's leave, which they set out to spend about the Channel in their motor-cruiser Grampus. Their experiments are an object of special interest to one Cosens, also on the staff at the Research Establishment, who is in the Secret Service of a foreign power. Thinking that their cruise is connected with their experiments, his underlings dog them in another craft, Batley Lass, overpower and take them prisoners on board a vessel belonging to the foreign power in question. That ship is wrecked, the two Britons being the only survivors. Some of the spy gang are arrested, tried and sentenced, and the great experiment proceeds. After one sensational check it is carried out, the torpedo being aimed to alight in the middle of the Sahara. The results produced are astonishing and far-reaching literally and figuratively, and make a remarkable climax to an intensely thrilling story.
