  • Among the crates of cargo loaded aboard The Golden Branch it transpires there is one containing a prisoner who has been kidnapped and put into a state of 'suspended animation' . The discovery of this crate, which was smuggled on board accompanied by a professor noted for his research into the science of suspended animation, would alone have been enough to make Nigel Mayne's first voyage a memorable one, but circumstances bring it about that he plays a substantial part in the plans to help the kidnapped man. These involve Nigel and his fellow-apprentice Tom Reed in an adventurous trip ashore, and during the return journey to their ship, their mission safely accomplished, they have to call on all their courage to face an alarming situation.
