  • On his first voyage, Don Matheson joins the Golden Gain, bound for Singapore, Hong Kong and points farther East. His fellow-cadets are a friendly happy lot, fond of a leg-pull and practical jokes, but reliable comrades in emergency, as they get ample opportunity to show. The voyage, through the Mediterranean and into Eastern waters, is chock-full of interest, from catching sharks to riding out a violent typhoon and repelling Chinese pirates who craftily get themselves on board. Orders are received to return via Cape Horn, so Don completes a journey round the world - the first of many, for he knows for certain by this time that his choice of the sea for a career was the right one.
